The Stage, the UK publication for the performing arts industry, has announced it will relaunch its print edition in January 2026 as a monthly magazine, offering deeper insight, richer storytelling and more space to explore the theatre world in full.
The publisher says the change marks a move from a weekly newspaper to a monthly magazine, creating space for long-form features, in-depth interviews and analysis – that take readers further behind the curtain than ever before.
Designed to celebrate and explore the theatre industry in greater depth, the magazine will introduce exclusive features, including the First Night Diary, a consolidated monthly view of key openings to help readers plan their theatregoing with confidence, plus expanded space for Long Reads and exclusive interviews, The Stage continued.
Since 1880, The Stage says it has been one of the most trusted sources for theatre news, reviews, insight and advice. While the format is changing, its mission remains the same: to champion the people, stories and issues shaping the industry – with integrity, authority and passion.
Alistair Smith, editor of The Stage, said: “For almost 150 years, The Stage has adapted to reflect the industry it serves. We’ve moved from broadsheet to tabloid, from black-and-white to full colour, and – most significantly in recent decades – into digital publishing. Each evolution has allowed us to serve the readers better, and this next step will do the same. Theatre deserves space for long-form interviews, rigorous analysis and investigations, and features that go beyond the headlines. A monthly magazine will allow us to deliver that: a carefully curated edition you’ll want to read, keep and revisit. Meanwhile, our digital journalism will continue daily, ensuring The Stage remains at the heart of the conversation every day of the week.”
The final weekly edition of The Stage will be published in December 2025. The new monthly magazine will debut in January 2026, available in print and online for subscribers, and at a wider range of retailers.
