Bloomberg earlier this week announced the launch of the Bloomberg Journalism Programs – Brazil, the first in Latin America. Bloomberg says the expansion of it global journalism education initiative was held August 1 to August 3 in São Paulo, and welcomed undergraduate journalism students from across Brazil. The program is being offered in partnership with the University of North Carolina’s (UNC) Hussman School of Journalism and Media and with the Department of Journalism at Faculdade Cásper Líbero in São Paulo.
In Brazil, 13 students were selected from more than 400 applications, added Bloomberg. The participants are currently enrolled at 11 different universities across Brazil including: Casper Líbero, Centro Universitário Celso Lisboa, ESPM Rio, FAM, Universidade Estadual do Piauí, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, and Universidade Federal de Roraima.
Bloomberg says The Bloomberg Journalism Programs offer students hands-on experience in business journalism, equipping them with skills to report on the economy, companies, financial and commodity markets, and other topics affecting the global economy. Through direct engagement with Bloomberg News and industry professionals, participants gain practical insights, and learn to navigate The Bloomberg Terminal. They also receive training based on The Bloomberg Way—Bloomberg News’ guide to reporting, editing, and applied business and economic knowledge. The Brazil program marks another milestone in Bloomberg’s mission to enhance business journalism education and career opportunities worldwide, the company continued.
“We are excited about testing the Bloomberg Journalism Programs in Latin America,” said Matt Winkler, editor-in-chief emeritus of Bloomberg News, and founder of the program. “Brazil is a highly diverse society and its economy and financial markets are growing. We hope to inspire a new generation of students to become inquisitive business journalists.”
Bloomberg Journalism Programs, established in collaboration with the Hussman School since 2017, have expanded from UNC-Chapel Hill and UC Berkeley to City, University of London. According to the Bloomberg there are more than 260 graduates of the program who have pursued careers at various organizations, including Bloomberg News.
Bloomberg says its Journalism Programs are part of its larger Global Business and Financial Journalism Education Initiative, which aims to advance business journalism and provide career opportunities for journalists from a wide range of backgrounds around the world. With support from Bloomberg Philanthropies and other international funders, Bloomberg Global Business and Financial Journalism Education Initiative furthers our corporate philanthropic mission to address inequities, support diverse voices, and expand access to education using the expertise of our employees and resources of our business to create lasting impact.
