EUP launches publishing internship

Edinburgh University Press has announced its first intern joins the team this week.

EUP launches publishing internship
Amy Norton: “I am honoured and thrilled to be joining the Edinburgh University Press team.”

Edinburgh University Press (EUP) says the internship has been developed with the purpose of widening participation in the publishing industry.

Amy Norton recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh, where she was a Widening Participation student. Throughout her time at university she has juggled paid work and volunteering (including at the Scottish Poetry Library) with her studies.

EUP says this paid, 12-month post offers experience across all areas of the business. With a base in the books editorial department, Amy will also spend time working with marketing, sales, production, journals and finance teams. The aim is to ensure a fully-rounded understanding of publishing, giving Amy the best chance of developing her career, added the publisher.

According to EUP, Amy will be supported throughout the year by experienced colleagues within the Press, and an EUP buddy, and will receive confidence coaching from a publishing expert as well as a learning and development budget to help prepare for work in the long term.

Nicola Ramsey, CEO, said: “We have long talked about the barriers to beginning a career in the publishing industry, particularly for those from under-represented backgrounds. Contributing to change in this area is perfectly aligned with our University Press mission, and I am delighted that Amy has joined us as our first intern.”

Amy Norton, publishing intern, said: “I am honoured and thrilled to be joining the Edinburgh University Press team. This internship has granted me a fantastic first step in my publishing career, one I would not have previously thought possible. I look forward to the knowledge, skills and connections I will gain over the course of this year.”
