IPSO welcomes new publishers

Four new publishers are to be regulated by IPSO.

IPSO welcomes new publishers
Rosemary Douce: “We are pleased to welcome new members to our regulated titles.”

Oxford Student Publications Limited, FRIDAY, Beehive News and The Quarry have joined more than 100 publishers, producing over 1800 titles, regulated by IPSO

FRIDAY is a conscious lifestyle magazine made for Muslim women, by Muslim women. Sadaff Rangrez, editor-in-chief of Friday magazine explained: “As an independent publisher, joining IPSO was a high priority for Friday Magazine as we appreciate the support that the body brings as well as the value of being regulated by a credible body. When the state and speed of media allows anyone to publish content without being fact-checked, being a member of IPSO is our way of saying we stand behind our writers and our words and are proud to be adopting the high standards needed to raise the bar for Muslim media outlets.”

Oxford Student Publications Limited has also joined IPSO. It is 100% student-run. Peter Chen, general counsel and strategy director of Oxford Student Publications Limited (OSPL) had this to say: “For us, joining IPSO is about holding ourselves to the highest standards of student journalism. OSPL runs serious publications, and with that comes responsibility to our readers, our writers, and the people we report on. Being regulated by IPSO reflects our belief that student journalists should be held to the same standards as any other newsroom and that the work we do here is no less impactful than the national media outlets.”

IPSO says being an IPSO regulated title ensures that a publication sets itself apart from unaccountable, unregulated content. The IPSO Mark carried by IPSO regulated titles is a visual symbol that they are serious about providing good quality content for their readers, the organisation continued.

IPSO’s Head of Standards and Regulation Rosemary Douce said: “We are pleased to welcome new members to our regulated titles. Being answerable to the standards set out in the Editors’ Code of Practice shows how willing a title is to uphold high editorial standards by being open to accountability and training.”

Beehive News is a news article rating platform. Rafael Cossi, co-founder of Beehive News said: “At Beehive News, we rate individual news articles from across the political spectrum, helping readers spot biases, omissions, and quality issues in real time. Choosing to be regulated by a serious agency like IPSO is a testament to our commitment to accuracy and objectivity in the thousands of news article ratings we publish each day. Having an independent third-party attest to our quality is essential for building trust with readers — and IPSO, as a leading press regulator, has the credibility and standards to ensure that.”

The fourth new title, The Quarry is a news provider on Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Nick Mann, editor, The Quarry says: “As a new independent outlet, building and maintaining trust with our audience is vital, being regulated by IPSO is a key part of that. It ensures we’re meeting standards that are easily accessible to the public who also get a clear route to make complaints if necessary, helping build confidence in our work. IPSO can also provide guidance and training, which for a small newsroom without the resources available to larger operators is invaluable in helping ensure our coverage can be bold and credible.”
