Mirror appoints new political editor

Following John Stevens' departure earlier in the summer, Mirror interim Political Editor Lizzy Buchan will be taking on the role of political editor on a permanent basis.

Starting off her career as a news reporter at Cambridge News and the Edinburgh Evening News, Lizzy also worked as health correspondent at the Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday. Lizzy, who has gained eight years of experience in Parliament, joined the Mirror in 2020 as a political correspondent. The Mirror says since then, she has been an integral part of its politics team, taking on the deputy online political editor role before becoming deputy political editor in 2023.

Caroline Waterston, editor-in-chief of the Mirror, said: “Lizzy has had a really successful six months since becoming our interim Political Editor following John Stevens’ departure in August. She’s overseen a change of government and the first Labour budget in fourteen years and has also done a great job hosting The Division Bell podcast."

Lizzy said: "I'm delighted to take on the role as political editor for the Mirror at such an exciting time in British politics. It is an honour to lead the brilliant political team and to uphold the Mirror's proud tradition of holding power to account and campaigning for our readers."
