New weekly podcast to launch

The Times and Sunday Times have announced a new weekly podcast The Royals with Roya and Kate, with the first episode launching on Friday 10th May.

New weekly podcast to launch
Tim Levell: “We’ve loved bringing together Roya and Kate for this podcast.”

Presented by the royal editors of The Sunday Times and the Times, Roya Nikkhah and Kate Mansey, the podcast will provide listeners with insight into the ever-evolving world of the British monarchy.

As royal traditions and protocols undergo upheaval, Roya and Kate will offer perspectives on these shifts, drawing from their experience and inside knowledge. The Royals with Roya and Kate goes beyond the headlines to explore the relationship between the public and the palace, added the publisher.

With years of experience on the royal beat, Roya is known for breaking scoops and her reporting, and has previously secured interviews with His Majesty the King, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex.

Roya Nikkhah, royal editor of The Sunday Times, said: "Digging into the royal beat with Kate is always thought-provoking and fun, so I'm excited to invite our readers and listeners to join the conversation with the new podcast. Every week, we'll bring our unique insight and analysis to the airwaves, delving behind the headlines to deliver the inside story.”

During her fifteen years in the field of royal reporting, Kate has produced a string of world exclusives, added the publisher. In 2022 she won the London Press Club’s Scoop of the Year award for her royal cash for honours revelations as part of a two-year investigation. Before joining the royal beat she won a British Press Award for her dispatches from Afghanistan.

Kate Mansey, assistant editor and royal editor of The Times, said: “After years of covering the same beat as Roya, it is fantastic to join together for this new podcast. We are both committed to delivering insightful royal coverage but we also share the view that maintaining a sense of humour is a crucial part of the job. There is a global fascination with the royal family and, with that in mind, this podcast will not only appeal to those who follow its impact on the world stage but also those who connect with the human side of the monarchy.”

Tim Levell, head of Times podcasts, said: “We’ve loved bringing together Roya and Kate for this podcast. Not only are they the most experienced and respected royal reporters in the industry, but they also get on brilliantly! Their revealing yet respectful conversations will rapidly become a must-listen for anyone interested in the latest news around the royal family. Roya and Kate will lift the lid on what’s really going on, while weaving in anecdotes from their years of royal reporting, combining expertise with humour.”

The Times and Sunday Times say they are growing their portfolio of podcasts known for original reporting, engaging interviews and authentic insights. Last month a refresh of the flagship daily news podcast was announced. Now known as The Story, it has a new look, new music and William Hague joined the presenter line-up.

Last year saw the launch of How To Win An Election, with Peter Mandelson, Daniel Finkelstein and Polly Mackenzie in weekly conversation with host and Times Radio presenter Matt Chorley.

In October 2023 The Times partnered with Apple Podcasts to provide subscribers with bonus and exclusive podcast content when they connect their subscription to the Apple Podcasts app.

This linked subscription provides extensive audio content, including bonus weekly episodes of The Times: The Story and Politics without the boring bits, alongside bonus monthly episodes of Off Air with Jane Garvey & Fi Glover. Plus, two Times Radio shows - The Ladder with Cathy Newman and Times Radio Today - will be made available for subscribers to listen to on demand. This includes access to a bank of archive episodes and interviews.
