SFX’s collectable HD3D cover

SFX, one of Europe’s bestselling sci-fi and fantasy magazines, is celebrating the imminent return of Doctor Who to Saturday night BBC One with a stunning, highly collectable 3D cover.

Published by Future, the special-interest media group, the cover of SFX’s April issue (on sale Wednesday, 10th March) stars the eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and his new assistant Amy Pond (Karen Gillian).  The 3D cover also includes the Doctor’s trusty Sonic Screwdriver, the Tardis and the Weeping Angels, first seen in the 2007 episode, Blink.

The exclusive SFX shoot took place at BBC Wales’ Cardiff studios and was overseen by SFX Art Editor Jonathan Coates, who masterminded the Doctor Who cover concept, using the full-page high definition 3D (HD3D) process, pioneered by sister-title Classic Rock last year.   Once again, Future worked in partnership with Hive Associates, utilising their advanced image origination software and production techniques.

Continuing the Doctor Who theme inside the magazine, SFX gets world exclusive on-set access and interviews Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and new show runner, Steven Moffat in a 9-page feature.

Following the successful SFX Weekender, which saw over 2,500 sci-fi fans invade Camber Sands, Sussex – the magazine recaps the 48hrs of mayhem in a 8-page feature, with four pages of photos.  Rounding the issue off in style, SFX counts down the ultimate list of sci-fi videogames.

Editor in Chief of SFX, Dave Bradley said: “Sci-fi fans are very excited about the new series introducing the Eleventh Doctor, and we had to mark the occasion. This 3D cover is the perfect celebration for a British series which continues to thrill audiences 47 years after its debut. The cover strikingly matches the tone of the new series, and if you look carefully you can see your first glimpse of the returning villains, the Weeping Angels. The BBC were incredibly helpful and we had exclusive photography time with the two stars, plus inside the mag we reveal what happened when we went on set, including big interviews with Matt, Karen and Steven Moffat.”

Stuart Galbraith, Associate Publisher of SFX, added: “We approached the Doctor Who team at BBC Wales with our plans for a very special cover and were delighted to receive their backing and an exclusive shoot with Matt and Karen to make our 3D cover come to life.  Having the UK’s biggest sci-fi show fitting us into their busy schedule further cements SFX’s position as Europe’s bestselling and most loved sci-fi and fantasy brand.  This issue will sell out and will become a collectors’ item in years to come.”

The April issue of SFX with the exclusive HD3D Doctor Who cover goes on sale Wednesday, 10th March, with a coverprice of £3.99.
