The Society of Editors Press Awards for national newspapers recognise reporters and correspondents, commentators, columnists, cartoonists, designers, photographers, scoops, investigations and campaigns. The awards culminate with the News and Sports Teams of the Year and coveted Newspaper of the Year title.
The Sunday Times leads the nominations league table with 22, The Mail on Sunday has 19 and The Times has 18. The Guardian has 14, the Daily Mail has 13 and the Daily Mirror, The Sun, London Evening Standard and The Daily Telegraph have 10. The Observer has 9, The Independent has 8 and the Financial Times has 7. The i has 4 and The Sunday Telegraph, the Press Association and Getty Images have 3. VICE Media and The Independent on Sunday have 2 and The New Statesman, Sunday Mirror, Colorsport Images, Reuters and Record Sport have one apiece.
There are 30 categories including the Journalists’ Charity Award, the Cudlipp Award and the Georgina Henry Women in Journalism Prize for Innovation, in memory of the former deputy editor of The Guardian. A shortlist will be announced by the WIJ at the end of the month.
The event is a prestigious date in the industry’s calendar with more than 400 editors and journalists coming together to salute the quality and success of national newspaper journalism in print and its corresponding digital platforms. Winners will be announced at a glittering gala dinner at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel, London on Tuesday 22 March 2016.
This year’s awards will be presented once again by LBC Radio presenter Nick Ferrari. A former co-presenter of The Big Boys' Breakfast on Talk Radio Ferrari moved to LBC in 2000 and after a few years he took over the breakfast show. Since then has won many awards including Sony Golds and Arqivas.
The awards are organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors. Proceeds help to fund the Society of Editors’ campaigning for media freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.
Sponsors for the awards include Camelot which has supported the Society of Editors since 2001, EY, Wiggin, Wellcome Trust, Google, Luther, Gorkana, Press Association, JTI, Reuters, The Hilton Park Lane, PCS, BT, Journalists' Charity and the British Journalism Review.
The awards are also supported by the Cecil King Foundation and Yves Saint Laurent. YSL makeup artists will be on hand to offer their services to guests ahead of the awards ceremony.
Chairman of the judges Bob Satchwell, executive director of the Society of Editors said: “The awards are judged by panels of newspaper representatives and respected independent figures from the media and beyond. It is a huge pleasure and privilege for the judges to examine and discuss the range, diversity and vitality of national journalism. Their combined qualities are unparalleled in the world.”
