The Economist issues app updates
Luke Bradley-Jones: “These refinements will better align with customers’ routines—whether they are looking for quick insights during a busy workday or a more in-depth, immersive read over the weekend.”

The Economist has announced the introduction of significant updates to its core app, designed to offer subscribers a more intuitive experience and connect them to The Economist’s global network of journalists.

According to the publisher the update includes improved navigation, a distinctive weekday and weekend content lineup and increased prominence of video formats. These changes are designed to make content more accessible and engaging, reflecting consumer demand for analysis of global events on a daily basis and in a variety of formats. They form part of an ongoing programme of app enhancements that will continue to roll out through 2025 and beyond.

“We are constantly listening to our audience,” said Luke Bradley-Jones, president, The Economist. “We know that our customers engage with content differently depending on the time of day and week. To reflect this, we worked with our editorial team to craft a distinct weekday and weekend experience. These refinements will better align with customers’ routines—whether they are looking for quick insights during a busy workday or a more in-depth, immersive read over the weekend.”

The Economist says the app will now feature:

  • A new home-tab experience
  • Smarter, more intuitive navigation brings the breadth of The Economist content to the forefront so subscribers can find the stories that matter most to them.
  • An optimised experience depending on the day of the week
    • Weekday content will be led by a refreshed "In brief" carousel for quick news updates and what readers need to know during a busy week. Other updates emphasise the use of short, vertical videos featuring The Economist’s journalists.
    • Dedicated weekend programming including must-read stories, profiles, 1843 pieces, cultural articles, games, and archive material, presented in a distinctly visual "weekend mode".
  • An improved weekly tab
  • An updated tab more closely aligned with the print newspaper layout for ease of browsing and reading the latest weekly edition.

These updates build on the recent introduction of a video tab, bringing The Economist video journalism into focus and featuring a range of formats for in-depth storytelling on all topics. Video has already become an integral element of the homepage experience and later this year will see the launch of further video features that will offer customers new and unparalleled access to The Economist’s journalism, the publisher continued.

“The revamped app marks a major step forward in our ongoing commitment to delivering a best-in-class experience for our subscribers,” said Liz Goulding, chief product officer, The Economist. “By making content discovery more seamless and tailoring the app experience to our customers’ habits, we’re ensuring The Economist remains an essential, go-to destination for fact-based journalism and smart analysis of the stories that matter.”

Subscribers can now update their app to version 4.41 to explore these enhancements and enjoy a more engaging experience.
