The change of publisher follows the end of the current contract in May, an extensive consultation with The Society’s 11,000 membership and a detailed tender process, says Think Publishing.
Dr Michael Pritchard The Society’s Director-General commented: “The RPS Journal has been published continuously since March 1853 making it the world’s oldest photography publication. The next phase in its evolution will be an exciting one with an exciting new design, two additional issues a year and extra pages. The content will reflect the interests and skills of members’ and their image-making and will support The Society’s wider remit within photography.”

The RPS Journal first appeared in March 1853 as the Journal of the Photographic Society to record the meetings and proceedings of the Society. It is has been published continuously ever since. Throughout the nineteenth century and in to the twentieth century it was a key publication for recording the technical and artistic developments of photography. Many of the great names of photography from Henry Talbot, Roger Fenton and Antoine Claudet to H P Robinson, P H Emerson and Frederick Evans are recorded in its pages and records of its exhibitions. The RPS Journal continues to form a record of photography and of the Society. The RPS has recently digitized its Journal from 1853-2012 which is searchable and freely available at www.rps.org/archive
