Guardian now available on iPad

Guardian News & Media has announced its Guardian iPad edition is now available on the App Store.

The Guardian App, mirroring the Guardian's Monday - Saturday paper, was created specifically with iPad users in mind and features the paper's award-winning content and design, plus some extras.

The Guardian iPad edition is available on Newsstand, a key feature of iOS 5 that allows consumers to find digital newspaper and magazine products in one dedicated place on the App Store, and organise them in one easy-to-organise bookshelf. Guardian subscribers will receive new issues automatically on their iPad. Latest issues and most recent cover art will simply appear in Newsstand.

Features of the app include:

• Full offline reading for all articles and pictures

• The ability to share stories via Facebook, Twitter and email

• Swipe to navigate between sections or stories

• Related web articles, which open in an in-app browser

• Stunning photojournalism

• Related video content

• Interactive advertising slots

Alan Rusbridger (pictured), editor-in-chief, Guardian News & Media, said: "The Guardian iPad edition is a new, fresh and appealing form of our newspaper content. By the time you've put on your coat and picked up your keys it will have downloaded to Newsstand - giving you a clean, portable, inviting version of the Guardian. The single daily download and the hierarchy of articles will suit people who love the Guardian's newspaper content. To that we've added a selection of relevant web articles - a unique digital interpretation of our newspaper and yet another step on our digital-first strategy."

Access to the Guardian iPad edition will be free for the first three months thanks to sponsorship from Channel 4, after which users will be able to sign up for a monthly subscription for £9.99 through In-App Purchase on the App Store. Guardian six- and seven-day print subscribers will continue to receive free access to the app after the three month period via their current subscription.

The Guardian iPad edition is available for free for three months from Newsstand in iOS 5, from the App Store on iPad, or at www.itunes.com/appstore.

For launch, the app includes the following sections from the Guardian newspaper:

• Top stories, UK, international and financial news

• Comment, editorials, letters and obituaries

• Reviews

• Sport

• Features from G2

• MediaGuardian, EducationGuardian and SocietyGuardian sections

• Weekly Film & Music supplement

• On Saturday, the Sport, Review, Travel, Family, Money and Work sections are all included along with the main newspaper

The Guardian launched its Eyewitness iPad app in April 2010. Since then, Eyewitness - which is free of charge and was shortlisted in the 2011 Brit Insurance Design Awards - has been downloaded nearly 650,000 times.

The Guardian's iPhone app was awarded the 2011 prize for 'world's best designed app' by the Society of News Design. Since launching in January 2011, the app has been downloaded 550,000 times, with 91,000 users going on to take out subscriptions.

The Guardian was named Newspaper of the Year at the 2011 Press Awards, and was inducted into the prestigious Design Week Hall of Fame in 2010; the only publication to have received this accolade. Prior to that, the newspaper won a coveted D&AD Black Pencil and a European Newspaper Award in 2006 for its Berliner re-design, and was named the world's best-designed newspaper by the Society for News Design in 2005 and 2008.
