Happy Birthday Sainsbury’s magazine!

Customers have been popping copies of Sainsbury’s magazine into their baskets each month since it was launched by Delia Smith, and her publisher husband Michael Wynn Jones, back in May 1993.

Sainsbury’s magazine is published by content agency Seven. Seven says: Now, 20 years on, the magazine has changed and developed – and it’s still the highest-read paid-for title in Britain.

To celebrate 20 glorious years of great food, features, fashion, homes, beauty, travel and more, the May 2013 issue (in store from 3rd April) will be on sale for the special price of just £1 (only 5p more than its original launch price!)

As well as all the usual ideas and inspiration, the birthday issue has Nigel Slater reminiscing about 20 years with the magazine – plus he’s devised a special birthday cake recipe for readers, too. Aggie MacKenzie, who joined the staff at Sainsbury’s magazine in its first year, shares her own memories of working on the magazine over the past two decades, and there’s a roll call of the big names that have graced the pages over the years, including Nigella, Jamie, Lorraine Pascale and Raymond Blanc.

There are competitions and giveaways galore, including a Design a Winning Cake competition to be judged by Cake Boy Eric Lanlard, plus 20 days of fabulous prizes to win on the magazine’s blog. Just log on to sainsburysmagazine.co.uk and join in the celebrations.

Editor Helena Lang says “I remember buying my first copy of Sainsbury's magazine when I was a new mum and installed in my smart new semi in the suburbs. Fast forward 14 years and I'm now the editor and proud to have more readers than any other paid-for glossy monthly magazine in the UK. Selling more copies on the newsstand than any other food title tells me how useful and inspiring Sainsbury's customers find the magazine – and it attracts the best celebrity chefs and cookery writers. We have some great and exciting plans for the future of Sainsbury's magazine. Here's to the next 20 years.”
