New Look at Newsprint at World Printers Forum in Amsterdam

Just in time for the inaugural World Printers Forum conference, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has released a new report on newsprint waste management that is designed to produce savings for newspaper companies and printers and help the environment as well.

“Newsprint Waste Management” will be offered free of charge to all participants at the Printers Forum on 15 and 16 October, one of three premium conferences to be held during the World Publishing Expo, the global trade exhibition for newspapers and news publishers to be held in Amsterdam. The Expo will run from 13 to 15 October, with the two-day conference beginning on the final day.

The Expo and related events – the World Printers Forum, the 7th Tablet & App Summit, and the 13th International Newsroom Summit – are expected to draw 300 exhibitors and 8,000 visitors to Amsterdam.

The report, written for WAN-IFRA by Kasturi Balaji, Director of Kasturi & Sons, the publishers of The Hindu in India, is also available free to WAN-IFRA members and for sale to others and can be found here.

“Newsprint by far is the costliest material that newspapers use,” said Balaji. “Experience shows that a sharp focus on the efficient use of newsprint has a dramatic positive impact on the efficiency of the whole production process.”

“There is a very simple but very powerful reason why something should be done about reducing newsprint waste – economics,” he said. “Money saved on newsprint is money earned. In addition, a reduction in waste is generally accompanied by a reduction in downtime and an improvement in quality.”

The report provides an update on a section on the efficient use of newsprint contained in WAN-IFRA’s Newsprint and Newsink Guide, which gives a 360 degree view of newsprint: physical properties; quality control; reel and core characteristics; transport, storage and handling; print quality; and waste control.

Mr Balaji will present the report’s findings and recommendations at the conference, the inaugural event of WAN-IFRA’s new World Printers Forum initiative for the newspaper printing and production community, including both experts from newspaper printing and production operations and vendors of related equipment.

The World Printers Forum, similar in structure to WAN-IFRA’s World Editors Forum for senior newsroom executives, will address the issues of concern to the printing community and will work to bring innovation to all areas of newspaper production.

In addition to Balaji’s presentation, the inaugural conference will examine: Innovations in print from around the world; how to make the printing plant into an independent profit center; savings from "going green"; latest developments in digital printing; cost calculation models for digital printing; and much more.
