The Society of Editors’ Press Awards for national news recognise reporters and correspondents, commentators, columnists, cartoonists, designers, photographers, scoops, investigations and campaigns. The awards culminate with the coveted Newspaper of the Year title.
There are 30 categories including the Journalists’ Charity Award, the Cudlipp Award and the Georgina Henry Women in Journalism Prize for Innovation, in memory of the former deputy editor of The Guardian and founding member of Women In Journalism. New categories this year recognise the Environment Journalist of the Year, Fashion Journalist of the Year, Travel Journalist and the Digital Scoop for breaking news on a digital platform. A shortlist for Newspaper of the Year will be announced next week.
Winners will be announced at a glittering gala dinner at the London, Hilton Park Lane Hotel on Tuesday 14 March 2017.
This year’s awards will be presented once again by award-winning LBC Radio presenter Nick Ferrari.
The awards are organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors. Proceeds help to fund the Society of Editors’ campaigning for media freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.
Sponsors for the awards include Camelot which has supported the Society of Editors since 2001, United Utilities, JTI, EY, Wiggin, Wellcome Trust, Google, Gorkana, PCS, Press Association, Reuters, Luther Pendragon, London Hilton on Park Lane, Journalists' Charity and the British Journalism Review.
The awards are also supported by the Cecil King Foundation which funds the Young Journalist of the Year to undertake a project up to the value of £5,000.
Jonathan Grun, acting chairman of the judges and a former past President of the Society of Editors said: “The Press Awards are all about recognising and rewarding excellence and more than 100 judges, independent figures with experience across the industry as well as representatives of UK national and digital titles, gave up their time to read more than 650 entries.
“The Society takes feedback seriously and alongside a review of the categories this year, we worked hard to ensure that our judges reflected the experience and diversity of the UK national news industry.
“We are delighted to see both an increase in entries from women this year and an increase in entries from news websites and platforms covering UK national news.
“We look forward to welcoming all our guests and those shortlisted on 14 March and we thank the industry, our judges and our sponsors for their ongoing support.”
