Telegraph Christmas Appeal raises over £640,000

Telegraph Media Group has raised in excess of £640,000 during its annual Christmas Charity Appeal, thanks to donations made by readers of The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and The Telegraph.

This week, Richard Preston, Assistant Editor of The Daily Telegraph, presented the three charities – Motivation, ShelterBox and the On Course Foundation – with their cheques, at an event held at The Savoy, London.

A huge boost to the appeal came when Telegraph staff including Allison Pearson, Charles Spencer, Bryony Gordon and cartoonist Matt Pritchett took to the phones to take donation calls from readers. The phone-in day raised close to £100,000 and over a thousand calls were received.

John Leach, Acting Chief Executive of ShelterBox says, “Being selected as one of the Telegraph’s charities has been a huge boost. The published articles portrayed ShelterBox’s work vividly, and there is no doubt that Telegraph readers were moved by what they read, and showed this in their donations. Of course, the beneficiaries of our emergency aid relief aren’t able to thank them in person. So it falls to me to do so, on behalf of the thousands of displaced families who have received shelter because of their generosity.”

David Constantine, Co Founder and Executive Officer of Motivation, said: “Being chosen as one of the three charities for the Telegraph Appeal for 2012 has made an incredible difference to Motivation. As a small organisation providing mobility and training for disabled people worldwide, the appeal has given Motivation and its vital work much needed exposure. The generous funds raised by the readers are a significant financial boost to Motivation’s income and will help us achieve more in the field. It was a pleasure to work with the team at the Telegraph and we are most grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the 2012 Telegraph Appeal.”

John Simpson, Chairman and Founder of On Course Foundation said, “The awareness and funds generated from the Telegraph Christmas Charity Appeal have been astonishing, and I would like to thank all those generous individuals who have supported the On Course Foundation, ShelterBox, and Motivation.

Since launching in July 2010, our charity has come a long way, and has now transitioned from a ‘start-up’ charity to one which is delivering a coherent, structured and progressive programme of events. The individuals, who featured within our campaign with the Telegraph, are just a few of the many we have helped in their challenging transition to civilian life.

The Foundation will harness the money raised from the campaign to expand our recruitment avenues to individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and to those who went through their recovery before the formation of the charity.”
