The Second Captains Podcast was launched in 2013 and quickly became the most popular pod in Ireland, winning the iTunes podcast of the year in 2014, says Acast. It has been chosen as one of the top ten British and Irish podcasts of all-time as part of iTunes Essentials and was also selected as one of the Guardian’s 50 best podcasts.
The podcast is produced by the Second Captains media house, which is also home to award-winning podcasts such as the international investigative series Where Is George Gibney?, produced for BBC Sounds. In 2021, Second Captains won a Banff World Media award, a Prix Europa award, three golds at the New York Festival Awards, and a British Podcast Award for its work.
The Second Captains Podcast is one of the most popular football-centric podcasts in Europe. As well as covering international football, rugby, GAA, and the wider world of sport, the team of Eoin McDevitt, Ken Early, Ciarán Murphy, Mark Horgan and Simon Hick have also proven themselves adept at covering societal issues, politics and popular culture over the course of more than 2,300 episodes.
Mark Horgan from Second Captains said: “Although our members-only shows continue as normal with no change to that service, our free-to-air programming will now be broadcast with Acast, and we’re delighted to have their support. Using Acast’s vast international reach, we’re looking forward to growing our Second Captains audience in Ireland and abroad.”
As part of the Acast Creator Network, The Second Captains Podcast is supported by Acast’s range of monetisation and growth options — which include premium ad products available exclusively via the Acast Marketplace, such as sponsorship, branded content, and direct listener support through Acast+ subscriptions.
The Second Captains Podcast joins other football shows on Acast, including That Peter Crouch Podcast, The Football Ramble, The Stand, Guardian’s Football Weekly, the TalkSport network of podcasts, Quickly Kevin Will He Score, Athletico Mince and Open Goal.
Jennifer Dollard, Content Director at Acast, said: “Second Captains have been blazing a trail in the podcast industry for so many years, and we are so proud to now welcome them to the Acast Creator Network. This is a landmark moment for us, and we can't wait to work with the team as the show continues to grow from strength to strength.”
