Total Film names the decade’s greatest movies

Total Film, the movie magazine and website, has named “There Will Be Blood” as the decade’s greatest movie, in a poll of critics to celebrate the end of the noughties.

The 2007 US drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was loosely based on a 1920s novel about Southern California’s oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  The film received critical praise and was nominated for numerous awards, including eight Oscars, with Daniel Day-Lewis winning ‘Best Actor.’

Other films making it into the “Decade’s most iconic movies” poll included “The Dark Knight” as ‘Blockbuster of the Decade’, with 2001 US movie Donnie Darko crowned ‘Cult of the Decade’ – the movie even spawning its own Christmas number one single for Gary Jules cover of Mad World.  British actor Simon Pegg appears twice in Total Film’s list thanks to his starring role in 2004 “Zomromcom” Shaun of the Dead for ‘Comedy of the Decade’ and as chief engineer Scotty in 2009’s Star Trek – picked as the ‘Sci-fi of the Decade.’

Best Film of the Decade – There Will Be Blood

Jamie Graham is Deputy Editor of Total Film:

“The Total Film selections were designed to identify the films that have most shaped the landscape of modern mainstream cinema. But we also felt it was important to reward the ‘best’ film of the decade, and this category saw Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood pip the likes of No Country For Old Men, Mulholland Drive, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Memento to the top spot.”
