Animal Planet takes top prize at Scottish Magazine Awards

DC Thomson’s Animal Planet was named Magazine of the Year at the 2011 Scottish Magazine Awards.

The title took the top prize at the PPA Scotland event in Edinburgh on November 30 as well as the award for Best Consumer Magazine Design.

Edinburgh firm CMYK Design was also a winner on the night, taking three awards in total: Best Business & Professional Magazine Design for FYi, the magazine of the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland; Customer Magazine of the Year for Aurora, the magazine for all eleven Highlands & Islands Airports; and Member Magazine of the Year for Surgeons’ News, for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The Big Issue Scotland, based in Glasgow, also picked up three awards: Best Magazine Cover, Consumer Magazine Editor of the Year and Consumer Magazine Feature Writer of the Year.

The Murray Cochran Award, launched by PPA Scotland in 2009, is the most prestigious accolade for an individual working in Scottish magazine publishing and was awarded to Gordon Young of Carnyx Group, Glasgow.

Magazine Publishing Graduate of the Year was Pamela Jane Morris.  This award is given in recognition of the close ties being developed between PPA Scotland and Edinburgh Napier University and is open to students who have graduated in the MSc Publishing course.

More than 300 guests joined in the celebrations at the gala dinner and award ceremony hosted by comedian Craig Hill at Prestonfield House Hotel on St Andrew’s Night, November 30.

Kathy Crawford, PPA Scotland Business Manager, said: "The publishers, magazines and individuals recognised by this year's awards continues to show just how strong the magazine sector is in Scotland and we're grateful to them for coming together to make this event a real showcase for the best in the industry."
