Archant and Northcliffe launch newspaper apps

Some of the the UK’s largest regional publishers are launching apps for iPhone, iPad and Newsstand, with a variety of models, using PageSuite’s Dynamic App technology and print replication product.

The UK’s best-selling morning regional newspaper, Eastern Daily Press, from Archant has launched alongside the Ipswich Star, Norwich Evening News and East Anglian Daily Times, on the same free download, trial and free 5-day trial, followed by reoccurring subscriptions on iPhone, iPad and Newsstand.

20 Archant county “Life” brands (Cheshire Life, Yorkshire Life, Cotswold Life etc) and other specialist magazines such as The English Home and Photography Monthly also launched and employ an initial free strategy – with a complementary issue initially available, followed by app-only time-based subscriptions (i.e. no print integration).

South Wales Evening Post, owned by Northcliffe, will soon be launching across iOS and will be available as a free download, including 14 days free trial. After the trial period, Northcliffe will be offering tiered and incrementally improving subscription pricing at £6.99 for 1 month, £19.99 for 3 months, £37.99 for 6 months and £69.99 for 12 months.

These major regional groups join the 300 publications that have already launched using the PageSuite Dynamic App platform. Titles such as Daily Express, Daily Star, New York Daily News, Newsday and Express & Star have seen a significant number of downloads using the replica form, with further growth post-introduction of Newsstand. PageSuite now claim to be seeing over 150,000 app downloads per week across all territories and client brands.

“Newsstand subscriptions allow publishers to automatically push their content to each device, with some titles seeing an average of over 25 minutes viewing time in the iOS Apps. This is great to see local media getting traction on the platform.” Says Ross Murphy, Managing Director, PageSuite Group.
