Celebrating the best of British editors, the awards categories have been shaken up to better represent the ever increasing diversity of print titles in the market and allowing brands to be judged within their competitive set, says the BSME.
The committee has also increased the number of award categories and removed the publication frequencies of titles.
The society is also championing gender neutrality – gone are the traditional Men's and Women's categories – now it's about titles going head-to-head in their genre to discover who’s the best. So, premium style brands like GQ will fight it out with Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar while mass market titles like Shortlist could be judged against Woman magazine.
Specialist titles like Car will be judged against the likes of Classic Cars and Auto Express and there’s an array of new categories including Technology, Craft & Hobbies, Travel, Health & Fitness and Food & Drink.
An additional part of the refresh includes a change in both the entry process and judging. From now on, the Awards will be both shortlisted and finally judged by the BSME committee, not external judges as we have done in previous years.
BSME chair Catherine Westwood says: "The BSME committee is now representative of such a wide range of editors of a diverse set of publications, we believe we have the required in-house expertise to pick the winners. So editors will wholly judge this year’s awards for the very first time – but rest assured, no BSME committee member will be allowed to judge their own entries to avoid conflict of interests. Editors should judge as they are the best judges!"
