Conde Nast appoints Karina Dobrotvorskaya

Karina Dobrotvorskaya has been appointed President and Editorial Director, Brand Development, of Condé Nast International with wide responsibility for developing new print and digital products around the world for the publisher of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Glamour.

In this newly created position, Karina Dobrotvorskaya (pictured) will focus primarily on launching new products and brands in emerging markets as part of a broad responsibility to support brand development in global markets for the international division of Condé Nast, which operates more than 120 magazines and 80 websites in 26 markets outside the United States. She will report to Jonathan Newhouse, Chairman and Chief Executive of the company and will be based in Paris. She starts January 2013.

“The purpose of Karina’s appointment is to guarantee the highest level of editorial quality as Condé Nast expands its branded products into new markets and new media,” commented Jonathan Newhouse. He added, “Karina is a superb editor who will use her talent, experience and know-how to fight for editorial excellence.”

Karina Dobrotvorskaya is currently President of Condé Nast Russia, having been appointed in 2008 after working on the editorial side. Born in St. Petersburg in 1966, she began her magazine career in 1998 as the first features editor of Russian Vogue. She was promoted to Deputy Editor of Vogue and in 2002, became the founding editor the decorating magazine AD. She served as a consultant on the launch of Glamour in 2004 and in 2006 was named Editorial Director of the company while continuing to edit the decoration title. Under her direction, Condé Nast Russia successfully launched Tatler, Brides, Condé Nast Traveller and last month, the first European edition of Allure. She also supervised the establishment of seven branded websites. She is known for editorial innovation, such as publishing a special issue of Vogue devoted to dance.

Like many Russian editors, Karina Dobrotvorskaya came from the academic world. She was awarded a PhD from the St Petersburg National Academy of Theatre Arts and worked as a professor for some years before crossing over into magazine publishing. She has published over 200 articles in her academic field.

Karina Dobrotvorskaya is married to the well known journalist Alexey Tarkhanov, the Paris correspondent for the Russian newspaper Kommersant.
