IPSO – the Independent Press Standards Organisation – has announced the appointment of former editor of the Metro Ted Young to its Complaints Committee as a member with recent senior editorial experience in mass market newspapers.
The Committee judges complaints related to potential breaches of the Editors’ Code of Practice and decides on sanctions. The lay-majority Committee includes members with a wide range of experience, including the law, education and policing.
Ted Young recently stepped down from his role at Metro, where he served for eight years. While editor of Metro, Ted served for five years on the Editors’ Code of Practice Committee.
Commenting on his appointment, Ted Young said: “I am delighted to join IPSO’s Complaints Committee having been at the sharp end of IPSO verdicts and having insight into the thinking behind editorial decisions which would be useful to the committee.”
Lord Faulks KC, who chairs the Complaints Committee, said: “We are delighted to welcome Ted Young to IPSO’s Complaints Committee. He brings a wealth of experience to support the Committee in the difficult decisions it must make in delivering robust regulation of the press.”
IPSO’s chief executive, Charlotte Dewar said: “Ted brings his years of experience of the industry to the Complaints Committee. As someone who was very recently navigating the decisions entailed in editing a modern news title, he will bring a fresh and current perspective to the discussions at the Committee.”
Ted Young started in journalism at the Harrow Observer and over his career has worked at the Northern Echo, Today, The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Express, London Lite, Mail Online, and New York Daily News.
