A poster front page announcing "Sir Alex Quits" led off six pages of coverage in the news and sports pages of the dramatic events unfolding at Old Trafford in the morning.
Rumours of Sir Alex's imminent retirement emerged on Tuesday night and made front page headlines in earlier editions of the MEN and on the website.
The website team in the MEN's Chadderton offices were in at the crack of dawn updating a live blog as Sir Alex arrived at Manchester United's training ground prior to the dramatic announcement.
Today’s souvenir edition of the MEN will carry a 32-page pullout charting the 26-year reign of the most successful manager in English club history.
A souvenir special publication will go on sale on Friday.
Sir Alex retires on May 19 but his last home game is on Sunday. The MEN will have coverage of this emotional day - plus coverage for the Blue half of the city as Manchester City bid for FA Cup glory on Saturday.
Editor in chief Rob Irvine said: "It's a heck of a week to be a journalist in Manchester! Red fans in the office are unsurprisingly emotional about the end of an era but there is fevered speculation about who will fill Sir Alex's shoes."
