When established nine years ago, the focus of the then named Kent and Medway Walking Bus Group was children’s health and wellbeing. Now the organisation has a widened remit to support KM Group with all its charitable work.
“Over the last three years the charity has evolved into an organisation far more appropriate to support KM Group’s wider charitable work and the name change is another important step in our development” says team leader Simon Dolby, KM Group’s Community and Charity Projects Manager.
The Kent and Medway Charity Team, employing eight part-time staff and based at the KM Group’s office at Whitstable, are the organisers of three Walk to School schemes for 200 primary schools in Kent and Medway. This service removes 140,000 school-run car journeys off the county’s streets each year, promotes health and wellbeing and teaches children road safety skills. This scheme has won the team an award from The Queen and four national environment awards in the last four years.
The team also arranges fundraising quizzes, abseiling, zip wire and water walking challenges. Their next big event will be the team's first Dragon Boat Race.
KM Group claims to have provided support to the community to the value of £2.6m during 2008.
