News UK launches media apprenticeship scheme

News UK has announced a raft of new apprenticeships to encourage greater diversity in the media.

News UK launches media apprenticeship scheme
Mark Hudson: “We want to create opportunities for people who aspire to work in the media from across every part of society.”

The 28 apprenticeships – across The Times, The Sunday Times, the TLS, The Sun, Wireless and News UK’s commercial teams, and spanning the UK and Ireland – offer two years of employment and training for each successful candidate.

Recruitment has now opened for the apprenticeships, and will close on May 2nd. In total, News UK will offer 45 apprenticeships in 2021. The hiring process will focus on competencies through assessment centres rather than on CVs.

Editorial and broadcast apprentices will gain a fully-funded NCTJ Diploma in Journalism, every candidate will receive on-the-job training, mentoring and coaching with experienced and talented staff, and each will be offered a competitive salary, says the company.

Mark Hudson, Head of Early Talent at News UK said: “We want to create opportunities for people who aspire to work in the media from across every part of society.

“If you have a passion for learning, an inquisitive and creative mind, this apprenticeship scheme will pay you a competitive salary while you get the hands-on experience, on-the job mentoring and coaching.”

The scheme follows the launch of News UK’s Kickstart programme, which will offer up to 100 6-month editorial traineeships in 2021.
