NFRN: cautious welcome for Express move

The NFRN has described Express Newspapers’ move to raise the price of its weekend papers with pro rata terms as a small step in the right direction, but warns that there is still a long way to go before newsagents are properly rewarded for selling the titles.

According to the NFRN: From this Saturday, the Daily Star will increase in price to 55p, giving retailers an extra 1p profit. However, this is still 2.3p less than retailers received prior to the launch of the Sunday edition of the Sun earlier this year when the new 50p price point was established.

The next day the Daily Star Sunday goes up 10p to 60p, giving retailers an extra 2p but still 8.8p down on what they were receiving four months ago when the paper was priced at £1.

However, and on the plus side, the 10p increase on the Sunday Express accompanied by pro rata terms for retailers, means newsagents will now receive 27p for each paper sold – an increase of 2p.

Commenting on the move, NFRN National President Alan Smith (pictured) said: “With News International standing firm and keeping the price of its weekend papers at 50p, it is encouraging that Express Newspapers is beginning to see sense and is giving newsagents some extra profit on its weekend newspapers.

“But we cannot forget that newsagents are still seriously out of pocket when it comes to selling weekend editions of the Star. While this is a small step in the right direction, there is still some way to go before our members receive the remuneration they deserve.”
