Scottish Magazine Awards 2009 announced

Dumfries & Galloway Life (pictured collecting their award below) has been named Scottish Magazine of the Year at the Scottish Magazine Awards 2009.

The magazine, published by CN Group Magazines, Carlisle, was presented with the award at a gala evening held at Our Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh on Thursday, November 26. The event was hosted by BBC Scotland’s Cathy MacDonald and was attended by a sell-out audience of almost 400 leading figures from the Scottish magazine industry.

Full details of the winners of the 20 awards presented on the night are available below.

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the inaugural Murray Cochran Award, a new accolade which recognises the outstanding services of one individual to the Scottish magazine industry. The award, which takes its name from two Edinburgh printers involved in the launch of the world’s oldest surviving periodical, The Scots Magazine, was presented to Robin Hodge, publisher of The List.

Fraser Allen, chairman of PPA Scotland and managing director of White Light Media, said: “Robin has done more than just encourage and nurture the careers of a generation of Scottish journalists, writers and publishing professionals. Thanks to The List’s long-term championing of Scottish artists, musicians and authors, he has ensured that the Scottish magazine industry played its part in developing a cultural self-confidence which, in turn, contributed to Scotland’s political devolution.”

Mike Soutar, chairman of the awards judging panel and managing director of Shortlist Media, praised the diverse range of titles produced by the magazine publishing sector in Scotland: a fact demonstrated by this year’s awards shortlist of 98 entries, which was selected from over forty publishing companies by the distinguished panel of judges.

Entertainment during the reception was provided by Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra, one of Scotland’s finest group of young musicians. Guests at the prestigious event included pupils from St George’s School for Girls, Edinburgh, who won the 2009 Scottish School Magazine Competition. The 2010 competition is now open to all secondary schools in Scotland and more information is available at http://www.ppa.co.uk/ppa-scotland

Kathy Crawford, business manager at PPA Scotland, said: “The Scottish Magazine Awards 2009 is a showcase for the very best in a vibrant and thriving industry, and I would like to congratulate the winning entries on their achievements.

“By inviting the winners of the 2009 Scottish School Magazine Competition, the awards ceremony also provided an opportunity for the key decision makers in the Scottish magazine publishing sector to applaud the next generation of writers, editors and designers.”

About the Murray Cochran Award

The PPA says: “The Murray Cochran Award recognises the outstanding achievements of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Scottish magazine publishing industry. First awarded in 2009, the honour takes its name from Alexander Murray and James Cochran, two Edinburgh printers who joined forces with booksellers Alexander Brymer and William Sands to launch the world’s oldest surviving periodical, The Scots Magazine, in January 1739. Now owned and published by DC Thomson in Dundee, The Scots Magazine format has remained largely unchanged for more than 270 years.”
