Social media driving Metro’s growth

Metro.co.uk claims to be the UK’s fastest growing newspaper website with social media playing a vital part in its continued growth.

According to the publishers: For the first time Metro.co.uk reached 20.1 million monthly global unique visitors, up 24% MOM and 161% YOY, as well as breaking the 10m mark in UK UVs for the first time – at 10.4m – up 21% MOM and 112% YOY.

Monthly UV’s from mobile devices topped 10.5 million – up 30% MOM and 277% YOY, with 52% of all UK traffic coming from mobile.

Social media was a key factor behind this growth, in particular Facebook’s decision to increase its traffic to publishers.

Metro’s made-to-share style content – from topical news stories to talked about virals – has seen the leading urban media brand best placed to reap the benefits from Facebook’s move.

Metro’s monthly unique visitors from social media sites are up by 839%, January 2013 to November, accounting for 30% of traffic to Metro.co.uk in November, up from 19% in the previous month.
