Strike ballot at Guardian print centre

Unite, the UK’s largest union, is preparing to ballot its members at the Guardian Print Centre (GPC) for industrial action over the company’s proposals to make a quarter of the staff redundant.

Industrial action at GPC, based in the London Docklands, would halt the printing of the Guardian newspaper in the south of England, according to the union.

Steve Sibbald (pictured), Unite National Officer, said: “Unite will oppose any compulsory redundancies and we will be seeking urgent discussions with the company on this announcement. The staff at the GPC have shown a great deal of commitment to the company and to this industry."

“Our prime responsibility is to our members and their families who are now facing an uncertain future. We will do everything in our power to retain the jobs.”
