The Scotsman launches iPad app

A new era for Scotland’s national newspaper is beginning with the launch of The Scotsman iPad app, available now on the App Store. It claims to be Scotland’s first dedicated multimedia news iPad app.

John McLellan, Scotsman Publications’ Editor-in-Chief, said: “This is a major development which keeps The Scotsman up to speed with the latest media technology. Devices such as the iPad will play an increasingly dominant part in the way people access information and this is one of the most important steps forward in The Scotsman’s 200-year history. It is a very different experience to reading online and having been at the forefront of that newspaper revolution over ten years ago it is fitting that we are in the midst of this one.”

The Scotsman app will feature the best, up-to-date content from The Scotsman, delivered in a brand new design format for the iPad. Alternatively, users can download the daily edition of the newspaper.

Content channels include:

• Scottish, UK and international news and business, updated throughout the day

• Exclusive opinion from Scotland’s leading news, politics and business commentators including Bill Jamieson, Alf Young, George Kerevan, Lesley Riddoch and Allan Massie

• The best in Scottish sports coverage and analysis, including Scottish sports feature writer of the year Tom English, football from Alan Pattullo and Stephen Halliday, and rugby from David Ferguson

• Arts & Culture, Lifestyle and Scottish Heritage channels

• The Capital’s news and sport from the Edinburgh Evening News

Navigation is simple: In the ‘Digital’ section of the app, users can scroll to browse content across all channels before clicking into articles and swiping to read more; in the ‘Paper’ section, users can see and access every page of the latest edition, and use ‘Downloads’ to read offline or ‘Archive’ to access previous editions.

The Scotsman iPad app will be available for free for the first 30 days when users first download it, after which there will be a monthly subscription for £7.99. It aims to appeal to regular readers, subscribers and scotsman.com users, and offers the opportunity to grow readership amongst iPad users, business travellers, sports fans, expat Scots and commuters.

Scotsman Publications’ Managing Director Andrew Richardson, added: “We are delighted to announce the launch of The Scotsman iPad app, which ensures that we remain at the forefront of multimedia development in Scotland. The Scotsman app offers the best of both worlds, giving readers the choice of either leafing through the pages of The Scotsman newspaper or of reading the content in a digital format, with live news, video and enhanced use of photographs. Either choice provides a great new way to keep in touch and up to date.”

Ideal for people on the move, it will be sponsored by East Coast for the first four months. East Coast runs train services on the East Coast Main Line between Scotland and England. There will be ongoing opportunities available for sponsors and advertisers.
