BBC’s Sophie Raworth to present press awards

Sophie Raworth will present the premier awards for British national newspaper journalism in 2011, the Press Awards.

Raworth (pictured), who presents the BBC’s One O’Clock News, will hand over the awards in the Press Awards that are organised by the Society of Editors at a glittering ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel on Tuesday March 20.

There were more than 650 entries for the 33 categories in the awards that celebrate the achievements of national newspapers last year, topped off by the coveted Newspaper of the Year title.

The awards help to fund the Society of Editors’ campaigning for press freedom and the Journalists’ Charity. Sophie will donate her fee to charity.

Raworth has presented the BBC's Six O'Clock News and the BBC Breakfast show. Sophie joined the BBC regional trainee scheme in 1992 and went on to become a reporter for Greater Manchester Radio, later moving to Brussels and then to BBC Look North.

After joining Breakfast she anchored the programme from Los Angeles on Oscars night and from Washington during Clinton's impeachment trial. She has stood in as presenter of the Andrew Marr show on Sunday mornings and presented a number of BBC specials.

Chairman of the judges Bob Satchwell, executive director of the Society of Editors said: “Sophie will bring her special skills as a presenter mixing the gravitas required to recognise the important journalism of last year with celebration of the diversity and brilliance of our national newspapers.”

“Despite unprecedented attention and negative comment during 2011, the papers and their journalists produced many terrific stories that informed and entertained, playing a vital role in our democracy.”
