The Government last week announced that News UK’s COO, David Dinsmore, has been appointed to the new role of Permanent Secretary, Director of Communications.
David has served 35 years at News UK, beginning his career as a reporter in Scotland in 1990. His journey includes roles as editor of The Scottish Sun, general manager of News Scotland, managing editor of The Sun, director of operations for News UK and, in 2013, he became editor of The Sun.
As editor, he continued the long tradition of campaigning journalism, launching the Give Me Shelter campaign which reversed £3m of funding cuts overnight and led to legislation that made it compulsory for every local authority to provide accommodation for domestic abuse victims, added News UK. It was under his editorship that The Sun dropped Page 3 and the paper supported a grassroots campaign which had hugely successful results in raising awareness of breast cancer and saving lives through early detection.
News UK says as part of his chief operating officer role, David was responsible for the efficient running of the company’s retail, print and supply chain operations. He oversaw the creation of the joint venture with DMG Media, ensuring there is longevity to printing operations and preserving more than 200 jobs at the plant in Knowsley, Liverpool.
Most recently he has focused on developing crucial partnerships with the tech platforms, including Google, Apple, Open AI and Facebook, News UK continued. He has also been a strong advocate for embracing AI and exploring its full potential.
He has been a key industry figure and has represented News UK and News Corp on many bodies, including periods as chair of both the NMA and Newsworks. He has also served as a board member of INMA. He is president of Newstraid, the charity for newsagents and wholesalers. He and his wife Jill have worked hard to help raise millions for children’s charity Buttle UK.
David goes on to his new role in November.
