Editorial changes at Trinity Mirror

After 16 years as editorial director regionals, Neil Benson has decided to step down. Neil will remain with the company until the end of the year in the role of group executive editor, working on a number of editorial projects.

Alan Edmunds, currently Neil’s deputy, is promoted to editorial director regionals. Alan will report to group editor-in-chief Lloyd Embley.

Regionals digital publishing director David Higgerson is promoted to the new role of digital editorial strategy director.

David, whose responsibilities will extend across the whole group, will report to chief innovation officer Eirik Svendsen, with a dotted reporting line to Lloyd Embley on editorial matters.

Alan and David will take up their new roles from June 1.

As announced previously, Mirror Online editorial director Pete Picton has decided to leave the company, to pursue a Masters degree.

Ben Rankin, currently editor of Mirror Online, will be promoted to editorial director Mirror Online, reporting to Lloyd Embley, on Pete’s departure.

Lloyd Embley said: "I would like to thank Neil and Pete for everything they have done for Trinity Mirror. They have both been at the heart of the great strides we have made in recent years.

"These are incredibly well-deserved promotions for Alan, David and Ben and I wish all three every success in their new roles."

Neil Benson said: "After 43 years in the industry and 24 years with Trinity Mirror, I feel now is the right time to hand over the reins.

"I’ve been extremely fortunate to work with a hugely talented team, who I know will continue to tackle the challenges facing the industry with enormous commitment and skill."
