Government Celebrates UK Creative Industries

The Government is celebrating the UK creative industries this week with a digital event called #CreateUK.

As reported by the Newspaper Society: The online event aims to "look at what makes the UK’s creative industries so exceptional"and includes "video interviews, Twitter debates, blogs and graphics."

The NS is getting involved by tweeting key newspaper industry statistics and highlighting examples of the sector’s creativity, such as strong national ad campaigns in local press as highlighted in Campaign's annual, and the Daily Mirror's #Madeyouthink campaign across print, outdoor, TV and social media.

The newspaper sector - national, regional and local newsbrands - is worth £6 billion and newspapers are by far the biggest investors in news in the UK, accounting for 69 per cent of the total spend on news provision.

Also this week, Shadow Culture Secretary Harriet Harman championed advertising as a“British success story” which can prevent harm and influence behaviour.

Speaking at the ISBA annual lunch on Tuesday, Ms Harman said: “Advertising is a British success story, both as an important and creative industry, but also in the work that it does to promote price competition at home and promote British exports overseas.

“Advertising is powerful and it must also be responsible. And this applies as new ways of engaging with the public are developed.

“Our policy on advertising will be based on sound evidence and developed through close working with industry.”

In a press release, the Labour Party said it had been estimated that every £1 of advertising generates £6 for the economy.
