January digital ABC figures show record online traffic for the Guardian

The Guardian website saw record traffic of over 90m monthly unique browsers in January, according to the latest digital figures from ABC released yesterday.

Monthly unique browsers pushed past the 90m mark for the first time, taking the total for January up to 90,333,500 - a rise of 5.95% month on month, and 15.91% year on year. Monthly page impressions were also up to 606,095,967, which is a rise of 11.62% month on month, and a rise of 27.63% year on year. This new high follows a record of 85,259,691 monthly unique browsers in December 2013, says the Guardian.

Traffic in the UK was particularly strong, with monthly unique browsers rising 17% against December’s total, to 32.5 million. This was partly driven by a high number of referrals from social media, as well as people coming directly to www.theguardian.com.

David Pemsel, deputy chief executive of Guardian News and Media said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see theguardian.com go from strength to strength, with January’s traffic breaking through the 90m barrier for the first time. It’s especially heartening to know we are attracting large numbers of new readers from social media, who are returning time and time again for more of our quality, agenda-setting journalism.

“The Guardian continues to grow both in the UK and globally, and with ambitious commercial and digital plans in place for the coming months, we look forward to further cementing our position as a leading global media brand.”
