Launch: Daily Mirror Collection

Sport Media has launched the Daily Mirror Collection, a series of specials. The first issue, which goes on sale 7 March, priced £4.99, looks back at the Beatles’ conquest of America.

According to distributors COMAG Specialist: With features and photos taken from the archives of the Daily Mirror newspaper, every issue of the Daily Mirror Collection will be devoted to a single subject. The first of these is about the Beatles, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the band’s first U.S. visit.

Formed in 1960 and already a hit on this side of the pond, it was not until 1964 that the Beatles broke America, becoming the global superstars that we know them as today.

The U.S. press had largely been amused by ‘Beatlemania’ sweeping Britain at the time, by early 1964 however, the joke was less funny, as the phenomenon had gone Stateside.

Released in late 1963, the Fab Four’s ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ became a massive U.S. hit in early 1964, selling one and a half million copies in three weeks! This success prompted the Beatles to make their first visit in February, leading the ‘British Invasion’.

An estimated 73 million people watched the Beatles make their first live appearance on U.S. TV on The Ed Sullivan Show on 9 February 1964, some 40% of the total U.S. population!

The first time many people in the country had seen or heard the boys, it is fair to say that February 1964 not only broke the U.S. for the Beatles, but also for the bands that followed.

With features, interviews and photos taken from the archives of the Daily Mirror, many of which are previously unseen, Daily Mirror Collection – Beatles In The USA will commemorate and celebrate this historic time for both the band itself and British music.

Perfect bound and 84-pages, Daily Mirror Collection – Beatles In The USA will have photos, interviews and features about the Fab Four from 1964, the ‘lost tour diary’ as well as looking at the enduring appeal of the Beatles and their legacy, 50 years later.
