Local Newspaper Week 2012 Dates Announced

This year’s celebratory Local Newspaper Week will be held during the week of 21-27 May.

The annual campaign run by the regional press aims to raise awareness of the strengths of local newspapers and the important functions they perform in communities across Britain.

This year, in the run up to major events the Diamond Jubilee and London 2012 Olympics, Local Newspaper Week will highlight how local papers can help people tap into the celebratory mood.

The Week aims to highlight how local papers help people to come together to enjoy celebrations by promoting or organising local events, celebrating the achievements of its readers, or helping to promote local success stories.

Each year, says the Newspaper Society, hundreds of local and regional papers take part by running themed supplements or features in their titles.

Some papers hold meet the team surgeries for readers while others invite guest editors to take the reins for a day during the Week, which coincides with the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards and the NS AGM on 21 May.

A dedicated Local Newspaper Week website will go live in the coming weeks and local newspapers will be able to download Week-themed images and content to use during the Week.
