New BMJ and American Diabetes Association title launched

Guillermo Umpierrez has been appointed inaugural editor in chief of BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, the collaborative venture between global healthcare knowledge provider, BMJ, and the American Diabetes Association (Association).

Association member Dr Umpierrez is professor of medicine at the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Emory University School of Medicine. He also serves as director of the Grady Hospital Clinical Research Unit, Atlanta-CTSA, and as director of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Section at Grady Health Care System.

BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care will cover all aspects of basic and clinical research in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and associated complications, such as cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors. All material will be subject to rigorous peer review.

The continuous publication format will offer clinicians and researchers in the field rapid and timely access to the latest original research on the treatment and care of the disease, the prevalence of which has soared in recent decades, says the publisher.

Glen P Campbell, BMJ’s US Managing Director, said: “The official launch of this journal is a major step in supporting researchers as they seek a cure for diabetes. In addition, by providing open access to content, we will put the latest research and clinical findings into the hands of physicians who are committed to improving the lives of patients with this chronic disease.”

He continued: “BMJ is proud to collaborate with the Association, which is the unparalleled leader in the global fight against diabetes.”

Dr Robert Ratner, Chief Scientific & Medical Officer of the American Diabetes Association, commented: “The Association is delighted to add BMJ Diabetes Research & Care to our journals portfolio as the official open access publication of the Association.

“BMJ’s interest in improving healthcare outcomes, coupled with our mission to prevent and cure diabetes, make a perfect foundation for this new journal.”
