Playboy celebrates 60th anniversary

The special 60th anniversary issue of Playboy, with Kate Moss on the cover, goes on sale 19 December, priced £5.95.

According to distributors COMAG: Now one of the most recognised brands in the world, it is hard to think that when Hugh Heffner launched Playboy in December 1953 he did not give it a cover date, as he did not know whether he would be able to produce a second issue!

Not only was there a second issue of the magazine, but Playboy quickly went on to become part of the U.S. pop culture landscape, successfully combining photos of glamorous women, with lifestyle features, social and political issues, short stories, humour and celebrity interviews.

Renowned for more than just its photos of nude women, Playboy has always had a unique mix of essays, articles, fiction and features. Written by pre-eminent names in their fields, contributions include pieces on literature, economics, politics, art, academia, sports and more.

Often controversial, but always insightful, since the first Playboy Interview in 1962 (with jazz legend Miles Davis), Playboy has featured interviews with more than 600 celebrities, including Muhammad Ali, Bill Gates, Fidel Castro, Woody Allen, Martin Luther King, Princess Grace, Bob Dylan, Malcolm X, the Beatles, Barbra Streisand, Orson Welles, Mae West and Yasir Arafat.

With Kate Moss on the cover and inside in an unprecedented 18-page feature, the Jan/Feb-14 issue of Playboy is a celebration of the magazine and its 60-year-history.

As well as this pictorial and interview with the supermodel, the Jan/Feb-14 issue of Playboy has Hollywood a-lister Ben Affleck as the subject of its Playboy Interview, while there is also an exclusive new comic, brand new fiction and the title’s 60th anniversary ‘Playmate of the Year’.

Having convened a panel of leading feminists to discuss the best and worst of sexual liberation in modern America since 1953, Playboy reveals what was said in the Jan/Feb-14 issue.

The Jan/Feb-14 issue of Playboy also includes some of the best correspondence received in the past 60 years, including letters from Bertrand Russell, Ronald Reagan and Ian Fleming.

In addition to this, the anniversary issue of Playboy has ad expert George Lois exploring some of the most creative and peculiar adverts that have ever graced the magazine’s its pages.
