Retro Gamer celebrates reaching 100

Imagine Publishing’s Retro Gamer magazine celebrates its 100th issue this month.

In what must be a world-first, says the publisher, they have decided to reward its loyal and passionate fans by packaging this historic issue with a complete reprint of the first issue of the magazine, originally published in 2004. This makes issue 100, on sale now, an “unmissable” prospect for anyone who loves classic gaming.

Retro Gamer issue 100 features brand new editorial from such industry luminaries as John Romero, David Braben, Eugene Jarvis and David Crane, as well as exclusive new interviews with the likes of Rob Hubbard and C64 legend Andrew Braybrook. It includes exhaustive features on some of the biggest franchises in gaming, ranging from Sonic The Hedgehog and Grand Theft Auto right through to Tetris, and delves inside one of the biggest 8-bit home computers of all time, the ZX Spectrum.

The true gem, according to the publishers, in issue 100’s crown is the included reprint of the original issue 1, making it a packed double issue with a total of 216 pages of retro goodness. This represents a rare opportunity to get hold of the out-of-print magazine that started it all and grab a piece of videogame history that few were able to sample the first time it was published.

“Reaching the hundredth issue is an exciting and incredible achievement, and one we’re extremely proud of,” commented Editor Darran Jones. “We’ve worked very hard to ensure that the issue features amazing exclusive content, and we’re ecstatic with the support we’ve had from veteran industry insiders like David Braben and David Crane. We’re also delighted to include issue 1, as it gives readers a fantastic and unique opportunity to discover how our award-winning magazine began.”

“Retro Gamer is a magazine that we’re truly proud of,” added Rick Porter, Editor in Chief. “Not only has it hit its hundredth issue, but it is also selling better than ever – bucking the trend set by most other magazines in the games industry. The wealth of experience and passion that goes into each issue is the key on this title, and issue 100 has had more of this than ever poured into it. The fans are going to love it.”

Group Managing Director of Imagine Publishing, Damian Butt, said of the milestone: “Since we acquired Retro Gamer in 2005 it has been one of my favourite magazines, both from a personal point of view, because I grew up in the golden age of gaming, but also because it has the most loyal and passionate fans of any magazine I have ever been involved with. So it was only right that the ultimate fans get the ultimate gift – a complete reprint of the very first issue. Happy birthday, Retro Gamer!”
