Strong ABC performance for Guardian and Observer

The Guardian and The Observer had very strong sales for the second month in a row.

The Guardian says: Both saw a further rise in print sales since September, with the Guardian leading the field in the entire daily market in terms of month on month increase. The Guardian also had the strongest year on year performance.

The Observer saw the biggest month on month percentage rise in the Sunday market.

October figures for the Guardian show an increase of 1,261 copies month on month (+0.6%). Editorial highlights included our coverage of the Ralph Miliband row and the Qatar World Cup, as well as our ongoing coverage of the NSA and GCHQ leaks.

The Observer saw an increase in sales of 5,235 copies month on month (+2.3%). A Nigel Slater 20th anniversary special supplement proved very popular, and helped to sustain high interest across the month. It was also the second edition of new supplement Observer Tech Monthly. The Observer’s continued rise in print sales is especially robust considering the 20p price rise in September.

David Pemsel, Chief Commercial Officer, said: “October was another fantastic month for the Guardian and The Observer, with both titles seeing further increases in print sales. The Guardian saw the best monthly and yearly performance in the entire market. We are especially delighted that this rise comes off the back of a stellar September – bucking the trend and outperforming the industry.

“This shows our continued investment in print is being well received by our readers, especially heartening against a backdrop of a 20p increase in price for The Observer in September. In particular, the new Observer Tech Monthly performed well in its second month, and we had a strong boost with a Nigel Slater 20th anniversary special supplement. The Guardian’s agenda-setting journalism continued with strong stories on the Ralph Miliband row and reports on the Qatar World Cup and ongoing revelations about the NSA and GCHQ.

“In addition to our strong print sales, we continue to lead the way with our digital-first strategy and we are well placed to offer even more brands and businesses innovative ways to connect with our highly engaged global audience of 40 million unique users.”
