Student awarded Macmillan prize

Carolyn Jones, a student from the MA Publishing course at London College of Communication (LCC), has been awarded the Macmillan Student Achievement Award for outstanding work in magazine publishing.

The prize, a cheque of £750, was presented by Macmillan’s Deputy Chairman, Mike Barnard, at the student-led Publishing Innovation Conference held at the College on 9th March 2012.

The annual prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest overall grade on the MA Publishing course. During the course she and fellow students created Yuppie, a self-published digital and print magazine covering arts, culture, current affairs and fashion. The magazine has now launched two issues with Carolyn at the helm as the creative director. Her high scoring thesis – A Digital Approach to Brand Management within the Luxury Magazine Market – examined the importance of building relationships with readers through digital platforms.

Des O’Rourke, MA Publishing course director at LCC, said: “Our teaching of digital publishing was made relevant when Anthony Forbes Watson, MD of Pan Macmillan, commented on how relevant Carolyn’s thesis was to one of Macmillan’s future goals, which is to build engaging online reader group communities over the next two or so years.”

Carolyn says: “I am truly delighted to have won such a prestigious award. The Publishing MA at LCC was a fantastic experience that presented me with many challenges, allowing me to develop the confidence needed in order to go out and grasp every opportunity in order to achieve success. I am excited to begin putting all that I have learnt into practice.”

She has now secured employment at Progressive Digital Media.
