FT ramps up US presence

The Financial Times has made a number of strategic appointments to its US bureaux, strengthening its coverage of the Americas.

The appointments in New York and Washington, DC, follow the return of Gillian Tett as US managing editor, and include:

* Megan Murphy (@meganmurp) has taken up the post of Washington bureau chief, leading the FT’s coverage of US politics and policy and the 2016 presidential election. She was previously head of fastFT, a mobile-first product that provides global market-moving news and views 24-hours a day.

* Robin Wigglesworth (@RobinWigg) is appointed US markets editor, based in New York. He will oversee the FT’s coverage of US stocks, bonds, commodities, foreign exchange, derivatives and asset management. He is currently deputy head of fastFT.

* Demetri Sevastopulo (@DimiSevastopulo) has returned to Washington as US political correspondent after five years in Hong Kong as Asia news editor and South China correspondent. Previously he served as Pentagon & CIA correspondent and Washington business correspondent.

* Sam Fleming (@Sam1Fleming) has moved to Washington as US economics editor, covering the US economy and labour market, the activities of government institutions including the Federal Reserve and US Treasury, and broader US economic policy in the White House and on Capitol Hill. He was previously a financial correspondent, based in London.

* Shawn Donnan (@sdonnan) has moved from London to Washington as the FT’s world trade editor, leading the FT’s global coverage of trade and development. He will also cover issues related to globalisation and report on the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, and will contribute to coverage of the US economy.

* Gina Chon (@GinaChon) has been appointed US enforcement correspondent, leading the FT’s coverage of enforcement and white collar crime from Washington. She will also cover Congressional judiciary committees. She was previously US regulatory correspondent.

* Barney Jopson (@barneyjopson) has been appointed US policy correspondent, where he will focus on financial regulation, energy and the environment, and technology. He was previously Washington correspondent.

* James Fontanella-Khan (@JFK_America), has been appointed US M&A correspondent. He was previously a Lex writer in New York and a correspondent in Brussels and India.

* Ben McLannahan (@bmclannahan) has been appointed US financial correspondent and will relocate from Tokyo in February where he currently covers markets and economics.

* Neil Munshi (@neiLmunshi) is appointed US writer on FirstFT from March, a twice-daily email briefing with news curated from the FT and the rest of the web. He is currently Chicago and Midwest correspondent.

* Kara Scannell (@KaraScannell), formerly regulatory correspondent in New York, has been appointed investigations correspondent.

* John Authers (@johnauthers) has moved his senior investment correspondent role from London to New York.
