John Brown creates two magazines for Merlin

John Brown has created two magazines for Merlin Entertainments Group that mark a new departure in the way that the global leisure company markets its theme parks to schools.

Learning – A World of Education promotes Chessington World of Adventures Resort to primary teachers while Inspire with thrilling learning promotes Thorpe Park to secondary schools.

Each magazine, available in print and as an ezine, combines news about the park with features on workshops plus face-to-face interviews with teachers and pupils who have already experienced the educational benefits of the park first-hand.

In Learning magazine, teachers find out about Chessington’s Big-Brother style gorilla cam and discover what pupils from a Croydon school thought of their workshop on forces. They also hear from former teacher Toni Donston whose day-to-day job as Chessington’s Education Officer involves joining the engineers on their safety checks of the rides and learning how to handle meerkats and skunks. Competitions, including the chance to win a weekend hotel break, encourage feedback from teachers that will help shape future issues.

In Inspire magazine, teachers can read how students from a school in West Sussex organised their class trip to Thorpe Park themselves as part of their Leisure and Tourism GCSE. The park’s Education Facilitator Chris Chedzey, a former secondary school teacher, tells how frightening people in the SAW Alive maze is as much a part of his job as running workshops. Teachers also have the chance to win an iPad.

Stephen Pratt, Trade Marketing Manager, said: “We're delighted with the new publications. The magazines really help to convey the message that out-of-classroom experiences, like those offered by Chessington and Thorpe Park, effectively bring learning to life. It’s not every day a pupil will have the chance to handle a snake or experience a vertical drop and learn in the process!”
