Former Spectator editor Matthew d’Ancona is to join the Guardian as weekly columnist.

d’Ancona, who also writes on politics for the Evening Standard and GQ, will begin writing for the Guardian in January 2015.

His column will run in the Comment pages of the paper and online at Comment is Free. He will also be writing other occasional pieces for the Guardian.

d’Ancona’s first foray into national newspaper journalism began with pieces published by the Guardian in 1991. Since then he has become an award-winning columnist and writer, editing The Spectator from 2006 - 2009.

Speaking about the new column, d’Ancona said: “I am delighted and honoured to be joining the Guardian’s superb team at such an exciting time both for UK politics and for the title’s global expansion as the home of intelligent journalism, terrific commentary and free thought.”

Jonathan Freedland, the Guardian’s executive editor, opinion, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Matthew d’Ancona to the Guardian. Matthew has long been one of the country’s foremost political commentators, whose insight into Conservative politics and the current coalition is unrivalled. His arrival confirms that we offer not only the greatest depth of opinion, in print and online, but great breadth, insight and panache too.”
