New FIPP president and CEO appointed

Chris Llewellyn, international managing director of Bauer Media, the UK subsidiary of Europe’s largest privately owned publishing group, has been appointed as FIPP’s new president and CEO, and will join the organisation later in the year.

Llewellyn (pictured) has been a member of the FIPP Management Board since 1999, and served as its chairman between 2005 and 2007. He succeeds Donald Kummerfeld, FIPP president and CEO, who will retire from his position upon completion of his current contract on 31 May 2009. Kummerfeld, who has been president of FIPP since April 2001, will undertake new challenges as vice-chairman of Meteo Systems, a weather modification company based in Switzerland.

Announcing the appointment, FIPP chairman and chairman of Edipresse, Pierre Lamunière said: “For the past twenty years Chris Llewellyn has been an active member of the international magazine publishing community. He has acquired, launched and managed publishing companies in several countries, and has built-up a substantial international business for Emap/Bauer. In addition, Llewellyn has been a member of the FIPP Management Board since 1999, and has served as treasurer, vice-chairman and between 2005 and 2007 as chairman. With this track record, Chris brings to this position an exceptional understanding of the magazine industry. I am convinced that he will bring innovative ways in which FIPP can assist its members in developing a better magazine business in these challenging times.”

Llewellyn said: “After so many wonderful years at Emap and Bauer Media, deciding to leave was an incredibly hard decision to make. To be asked to lead FIPP as president and CEO is a great honour, and an opportunity I could not let pass by. Bauer Media is a FIPP member, so I will still remain in touch with my friends and colleagues in the business.

I’m joining FIPP during a period of great challenge in the business world in general, and for magazines in particular. In such unprecedented turbulent times, the role of FIPP becomes even more important in federating the magazine industry world-wide, and being the channel through which its members’ experiences can be shared and new business opportunities created. It’s a challenge I look forward to taking on.”

Llewellyn has extensive magazine publishing experience. He has been the international managing director of Bauer Media (formerly Emap Consumer Media) since 1998. Currently, Bauer Media has some 70 licenses in 36 countries with brands such as FHM, ZOO, CAR, heat, and Closer.

After college and three years marketing regional newspapers, Llewellyn joined Emap in 1980 as a brand manager. At various times in his 29 years with the company, he has been marketing director of the consumer magazine division, group research director of Emap PLC, and between 1992 and 1998 he was based in Paris as directeur général of Emap France.

During his career he has also been appointed chairman of the Board of FEAP, the European Magazine Association, between 1996 and 1998.
