News UK to Launch Native Advertising Unit

News UK is making a strategic move into native advertising with the announcement yesterday of a new unit that will be headed up by one of The Sunday Times’s most senior editors, Tiffanie Darke.

Darke is relinquishing her role as editor of Style magazine to head up the new unit, which will help brands to reach The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun’s engaged audiences through commercial partnerships. The new unit will launch in the next few months and Darke is now recruiting a team.

Having worked at The Sunday Times for more than 12 years, including overseeing three relaunches of Style, Darke will continue to contribute to the magazine.

Martin Ivens, Editor of The Sunday Times, said: “We are delighted to see Tiffanie pursuing such an important new way of working with commercial partners after her success at Style.”

Tiffanie Darke added: “Just as newspapers have been quick and dynamic in their editorial strategies to reach their readers, we have to be just as inventive and ambitious in the ways we help brands use papers to speak to their audiences. I am hugely excited about the opportunities this move offers, and very much looking forward to raising the bar on the quality of commercial content we are going to produce. My relationships with Martin Ivens, Editor of The Sunday Times, John Witherow, Editor of The Times, for whom I worked at The Sunday Times for over 10 years, and David Dinsmore, Editor of The Sun, will help us do this in much more seamless and innovative ways.”

Abba Newbery, Director of Ad Strategy at News UK Commercial, commented: “News UK’s commercial strategy is built on deep engagement with influential audiences. We have an unparalleled relationship with a high-quality, highly-engaged, well-profiled audience that believes our content is worth paying for. We can prove that our audiences pay more attention to advertising as a result of their engagement. There is a significant opportunity for us as the largest newspaper publisher to lead the market in identifying and developing new ways in which brands can leverage this relationship. Darke’s new unit will spearhead this project.”

Jackie Annesley, Editor of The Sunday Times News Review section and former head of features at the Evening Standard, has been appointed Acting Editor for Style. The strong Style team remain in place, with Claudia Croft as Fashion Editor of The Sunday Times, Richard Gray as Executive Fashion Editor and Laurel Ives and Laura Atkinson assisting Jackie. Pandora Sykes has just taken up the role of Fashion Features Editor after joining from the Debrief, says News UK.
