NME partners Selfridges in Project Ocean campaign

Leading department store Selfridges has invited multiplatform music brand NME and legendary music venue Koko to host a series of in-store Club NME gigs supporting Project Ocean, a campaign celebrating the beauty of the world’s seas and highlighting the issues surrounding overfishing.

Since Kaiser Chiefs declared it open in 2004, Club NME has been the place to catch the hottest new bands at the very beginning of their careers, claim the publishers. Klaxons, Gossip, Foals, Glasvegas have all come through the back doors of a Club NME gig before hitting the big time.

The Club NME gigs at Selfridges, which are free to attend, will take place on Friday evenings at 6pm in the Oxford Street store’s Ultralounge, which has been transformed into The Dive Bar in aid of Project Ocean.

The series kicks off on Friday, with Swedish new wavers The Sounds. Camden’s Bones also show their support, taking the May 20 spot, followed by Spark on May 27 and Young Rebel Set on June 3.

The partnership was developed by Selfridges and IPC Inspire Men & Music’s head of Sponsorship and Brand Solutions, Rob Hunt.

Rob says: “We’re really pleased to be working with Selfridges to support Project Ocean. When they decided to create a cool music event we were the first people they talked to. We called upon the expertise of Club NME KOKO to bring the best new cutting edge bands to Selfridges to create a series of unique small gigs, in this somewhat unusual, intimate venue. We hope they’ll be a big draw and get people talking about his very worthwhile cause.”

Katie Dyer, Special Project manager at Selfridges, adds: “We naturally turned to NME when we planned this campaign for their contacts and experience in putting on unique music-based events and gigs. We’re very excited about this project and are looking forward to a month of special one off activities, talks and gigs that will push discussions about sustainable fishing up the agenda.”

The campaign will also be supported in NME magazine and online at www.NME.com.
