The Guardian has shared two Novaya Gazeta pieces, translated from Russian to English, which explore Russian attitudes to the war in Ukraine and the role of Victory Day in the political ideology of Vladimir Putin.
The stories from Novaya Gazeta in the Guardian and other European newspapers fell on Russia’s Victory Day (9 May). Novaya Gazeta has suspended publication in Russia because of overwhelming censorship related to the Ukraine conflict.
Jamie Wilson, head of international news, Guardian News & Media, says: “Independent journalism plays a vital role in disseminating information, especially in places where press freedom is under threat. The Guardian, along with several other European newspapers, has today published stories by our colleagues at Novaya Gazeta at a time when access to responsible, independent journalism is more important than ever.
“Our hope is that the truth about the situation inside Russia will continue to get out from under the heavy hand of the censor.”
