The Sun passes 1 million Facebook milestone

The Sun's core Facebook page hit a million likes yesterday cementing it, say the publishers, as the social hub of Britain's conversation.

The Sun says: As well as hitting the landmark figure, The Sun is now one of the most commented Facebook pages in the world.

Comments on daily stories regularly reach more than 1,000 and often surpass 3,000.

The total across all The Sun's Facebook pages; including Sun Football, Dream Team and Fabulous magazine now totals over 1.8 million likes.

As well as being a conversation hub, The Sun uses Facebook to inform its current Sun+ subscribers about their great perks and competitions and flag up their exclusive content.

David Dinsmore, Editor of The Sun, said: "The Sun has always been at the heart of the nation's conversation and it's great we have such a dedicated Facebook community.

"It's a hugely exciting time for The Sun as we continue to grow our subscriber base through various channels."

As well as featuring the talking points of the day, the page is also believed to have the oldest Facebook timeline, dating back to 1043 when the Romans invaded Britain. It features spoof front pages from the book Hold Ye Front Page to show how The Sun would have covered events like the Black Death, the building of Hadrian's Wall, Guy Fawkes & the Industrial Revolution.

Capitalising on this huge success, The Sun has also appointed its first Social Media Editor.

James Manning, who is currently Social Media Content Editor for The Daily Telegraph, will take on this new role later this month, heading up a new, dedicated social media department.

A team of Social Managers will report into James; working across a 24/7 shift pattern to deliver The Sun’s messages in a joined-up way across the title’s numerous social media platforms.
